What Is Self Assessment, And Why Do You Need To File?
Self Assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax that isn't taken automatically from your wages or pension. If you earn from self-employment, property, dividends or other untaxed income, you must report it to HMRC in a Self Assessment tax return each year.
Who Needs It?
Self-employed people earning over £1,000, company directors, landlords, and anyone with income above £100,000 or other untaxed earnings.
Key Deadlines
The Self Assessment deadline for online returns is 31 January following the end of the tax year, and any tax you owe must be paid by the same date.
Late Penalties
Miss the deadline and HMRC issues an automatic £100 fine, even if you're just one day late. Interest and further penalties then build up quickly.
Your Responsibility
If you're newly self-employed, you must register for Self Assessment with HMRC by 5 October in your second tax year of business.
